About Us

The Brenners are a husband and wife team who recognize the importance of the unassuming fungi and want to make mushrooms and their benefits more available to their local community. Mushrooms can play an important role in diet, medicine, and environmental recuperation. For nearly 50 years, the Brenner family has cultivated the rich soil of our multi-generational homestead. It started when Doyle and Brenda Meyer began growing food to nourish their family of five. Today, that tradition continues through their son Peter and his wife Heather, who—alongside their five children—now grow 70–80% of the food that sustains our three-generation family of nine.

Rooted in a deep passion for nutritious, high-quality food, they also love sharing the abundance with the local community. What they don’t eat or preserve, they sell or trade with neighbors—keeping the spirit of community and sustainability alive.

Practices

Humble Fungi grows high-quality gourmet mushrooms on their small scale multi-generational homestead farm. These gourmet mushrooms are often farm-grown using wood-based substrates, which mimic their natural growing environment. Popular varieties include shiitake, oyster, chestnut, and lion’s mane. These mushrooms can be enjoyed fresh for their rich, earthy flavors or dried and ground into powder for use as a seasoning, adding a deep umami taste to various dishes. The Brenners utilize regenerative perma-culture principles to grow their products into nutrient dense foods while cultivating the rich soils they sprout from.
